Staying Active During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is such a miracle and we are so excited for our baby girl. I've been trying to stay as active as I can during this pregnancy because it makes me feel so much BETTER and I hope it helps my body after delivery too! The way I am trying to stay active is nothing fancy, I just try and get moving everyday!

I had no idea that a baby bump was heavy before I got pregnant and the Belly Sports Bra has been helping give me support! It supports my belly as well as my back. I have scoliosis so I was nervous that being pregnant would be pretty painful. As I have experienced some pain I can tell you that the Belly Sports Bra has been a little dream boat. So comfortable! The nursing sports bra gives support as well as comfort and I am really anxious to try it and wear it when I am nursing our baby because you can whip out those ta-ta's in a jiffy when baby says it's time to eat!!!

WALKS! Oh how I love walks- even if I do waddle all the time now. The Murdock Canal Trail is an awesome trail in Utah County that I just love. It goes all the way from Lehi to Provo. I love taking my dogs on walks there and David and I love going for walks there too! Going for walks is a great time where David and I just get to talk about our future plans and it always gets us pumped and excited. 

HIKES! I love love LOVE the mountains. And I love living on the foothills of the mountains. Going there is like hitting a refresh button for life. You get a breath of fresh air and it just clears your head. I use to hike much more strenuous hikes pre-pregnancy but for the time being I find trails that are mild... and then have my dogs help pull me up the mountain.... haha 

DUMBELLS! I have a 10lb weight at home and I whip it out during the week and do arm exercises and I also use it for squats. 

1: Increase Pelvic floor muscle strength:
How often you do Squats (with good technique) will help prepare the pelvic floor muscles for birth. This exercise will help strengthen your pelvic floor muscle much better than a kegel exercise! 
2: Prevent Back & Pelvic Pain
Strengthening your glute muscles, that’s your butt, helps to decrease lower back  and pelvic pain. Strong Gluteus Maximus muscles helps to stabilize your pelvis by supporting your sacroiliac joint. This prevents pain which is often caused by ligaments loosening due to pregnancy hormones relaxin and progesterone.
3: Prepare for labour 
Squats can help you specifically prepare for labour and birth. The exercise mirrors positions you can hold to help you cope with contractions in early and late labour, helping baby to descend deeper down into the pelvis.
4: Stronger Birth Positions:
Strengthening leg muscles during pregnancy by performing a variety of squats gives you more endurance in your birthing positions, ones that will allow gravity to assist making the pelvic opening wider which gives baby a bit more room to push through!
5: A great looking butt!
Squats will keep your rear in shape during pregnancy and then post so you don’t have to worry about what you look like from behind! :-)

FOOD! That appetite is a monster. I feel like I could eat everything in our pantry and fridge! In my first trimester I pretty much lived off of saltines, apple sauce and ginger ale. But by the time second trimester hit my appetite grew and it just keeps growing! I am trying to make healthier choices when that hunger hits. Like when I get an urge to eat a whole tub of ice cream I will pull out yogurt that I froze or fruit. I try and have TONS of fruit handy cuz when that 'HANGRY' moment hits,  and you just need something to eat--like now, you need 'easy to grab foods'! But it's ok to eat those sweets every once in awhile, just remember BALANCE in all things. suggests these 10 foods during pregnancy.
  1. Eggs
  2. Salmon
  3. Beans
  4. Sweet Potatoes
  5. Popcorn and other whole grains
  6. Walnuts
  7. Greek Yogurt
  8. Dark green, leafy vegetables
  9. Lean meats
  10. Colorful fruits and veggies 

GOALS! I think that it is super important to set goals and have something to work towards to keep you motivated. One of my fitness goals for post pregnancy is it train for the Woman of Steel Triathlon that's taking place in May 2016. 
The Race details are:
  • 300 meter swim
  • Bike 12.75 miles
  • Run 2.9 miles
Totally doable! It will definitely take some training (especially the swim part cuz I am no swimmer!) but I will have a good 7 months of training time before the race. I love the idea of the race where it's all woman- It seems so empowering!

Another fitness goal of mine is to do the Kayla Itsines BBG Challenge that's so popular right now. I love that I could do it from home and I think it will be a great with helping me train for the triathlon! 

While being that 'fit pregnant mama' all the time would be ideal, let's face it, staying active during pregnancy can be HARD! At least it is for me. My body is experiencing change unlike ever before. Despite my efforts I am seeing the scale raise everyday and it's at numbers that make my eyes bulge--'Are you serious!?' None of my clothes fit and all I want is to feel comfortable so I end up wearing my husband's shirts and sweats. I can't believe I have another trimester to just get even more 'large and in charge'. Before the pregnancy we loved high impact activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking and lots of hiking and camping. When I got pregnant I began to have to say goodbye to those activities for a little while and it was definitely an adjustment. I really miss it! It's crazy how when you are pregnant, activities that didn't even really phase you before totally wipe you out now and you come home and just crash!

My advice is just get moving everyday to get circulation going in your body. Remember you are GROWING A HUMAN BEING and your body is doing an amazing thing and it's such a beautiful thing as well!!! Thank God, yourself and your body for the hard work and dedication to making that precious little babe. It will all be so worth it!!!


  1. Gosh, I am really wishing I was as motivated as you are! Like you, I keep seeing those numbers go up and my appetite is crazy. haha! But, I know I need to move more and really think about what my body is going to look like after all of this if i don't take care of myself! Thanks for the post!
